This lockdown has severely limited my breakfast options. As I live outside the town I can no longer get any butter or other ingredients. Alongwith that I now have to stretch my money through French Toast the whole month with nothing to do but sit t home. So I looked for an easy to make breakfast that did not cost too much. I settled on halva. But I had another option in mind: French Toast.
The problem here was that nobody was stocking bread this far out of town. Today, I got a break. I managed to get two loaves of sandwich bread right off the bat at the corner store. So here is the recipe.
Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 slices of bread
Instructions French Toast
- Whisk together the milk and eggs and add the sugar and salt to the mixture
- Heat up a tawa or nonstick skillet to a medium flame. Add a few drops of oil to cook the toast. Reduce heat to low
- Soak the slices of bread one by one and fry on the skillet on both sides till golden brown
Remember that bread will soak up the mixture fast and go soggy, so don’t leave the bread slice in the mixture for long, just enough to let the mixture sink into the middle of the bread. You also need to be careful while flipping the slice on the skillet as it is quite fragile.
Also keep in mind that you want the middle of the slice to cook, but the sides will brown quickly due to the milk and sugar present, so cook on a reduced heat level.

It was still fun revisiting this old recipe of my college days. I hope that you are keeping yourself safe during this crisis and pray that it ends soon.
